Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka has stated that it is insulting for the original ‘Big Four’ to be compared to him. The men’s tennis was largely dominated by the ‘Big Four’ consisting of the former world number one’s Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

The only player who managed to win major titles while the Big Four were in full swing was Wawrinka, who lifted three Grand Slams. His first triumph was in 2014 when he lifted the Australian Open after beating Spain’s Nadal in the final with a score of 6–3, 6–2, 3–6, 6–3. It was the first title by a player outside the ‘Big Four’ in men’s tennis in nearly five years.

Wawrinka then went on to lift the French Open in 2015 after getting the better of Djokovic in the final with a score of 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 6–4. His last major title was the US Open in 2016, where he defeated Djokovic once again in the final with a score of 6–7(1–7), 6–4, 7–5, 6–3. The former world number three has been recently quoted in a report where he stated that, from his point of view, it is disrespectful for the original Big Four to be compared to him. Wawrinka also believes it will not be fair for anyone to equal his achievements with that of Murray, as both of them have won three Grand Slams in their careers. The former British tennis star was far more consistent in ATP 100 events.

“No, it's the opposite I think,” he said. “I got bothered when they call it like the big five or things like that or they put me close to Andy Murray just because he won three Grand Slams and I have three Grand Slams. But he has like 45 Master 1000s and he's been on the top 10 for 20 years and top five the same. So for me I'm completely away from them. I'm miles away from what they achieved and I think it's a little bit disrespectful for them and especially for Andy, because that's the talk that came more often.”
