Jannik Sinner is on the verge of becoming the greatest Italian male player of all time as he sets a new national record for most ATP wins in a season.
The 22-year-old has had a very successful season in 2023. Over the summer, he won his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open after he picked up the 250 title at the Open Sud de France in February.
Earlier this month, the Italian player defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final of the China Open, which saw him break into the Top 4 in the ATP Ranking. Moreover, Sinner is currently competing at the Vienna Open where he has reached the semi-final. Therefore, it is clear that he has amassed a lot of match wins this year.
Sinner equals Barazzutti's victories and sets national ATP record
After his quarter-final win against Frances Tiafoe in Vienna, Sinner secured his 54th match win of the season. Thus, he has equaled his compatriot Corrado Barazzutti's total from 1978 and has set a new national record for most ATP wins in the same year.
The 70-year-old reached a career-high ranking of World No. 7 in August 1978. Throughout his career, he won five ATP titles and helped the Italian Davis Cup team to victory in 1976.
This record means that Sinner is on the verge of becoming the greatest Italian male player of all time.
Sinner also has a 12-8 win-loss record against Top 20 players this season and has reached 22 semi-finals on the ATP Tour. Tennis fans have reacted to these statistics on social media, predicting great things for his future career.
"Already the greatest [Italian male player of all time]. 70's tennis cannot be confronted with today. It's been 50 years. And, if somebody wanna count big titles, Sinner winning a Major in the next 4 years will be better than [Adriano] Panatta as younger winner," wrote one.
