Jannik
Sinner knocked out
Stan Wawrinka at the
US Open with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4,
6-2 and advanced to the fourth round.
The Italian
entered Flushing Meadows as the 6th seed and didn't disappoint in the early
rounds, securing impressive victories over world No. 54 Yannick Hanfmann and
world No. 39 Lorenzo Sonego, both in convincing straight-set wins.
The 2016 US
Open champion, Stan Wawrinka, once again reached the third round of a Grand
Slam, repeating his achievement at Wimbledon, where he fell to Novak Djokovic.
He advanced through his initial rounds by defeating world No. 44 Yoshito
Nishioka and the 30th seed Tomas Etcheverry.
Sinner and
Wawrinka faced off for the sixth time, with a head-to-head record of 3-2 in
favor of the Italian, although the former world No. 3 had won their encounter
at the 2019 US Open.
Right from
the start of the match, 'Stan the Man' showcased a high level of play and
proved he was there to compete with Sinner. Sinner was the first to save a
break point in the third game.
With
everything quite evenly matched and played at an aggressive level, Wawrinka
conceded his service to the Italian in the sixth game, allowing Sinner to
maintain his serve and take the lead on his second set point with a score of
6-3.
The Swiss
player was far from slowing down and applied pressure by securing a break in
the second game after squandering five break points. With the initial
advantage, he managed to maintain it without giving his opponent any chances,
securing a 6-2 victory in the second set. Sinner struggled with a total of 19
unforced errors and only managed seven winners.
The third
set proved to be the most hotly contested, with both players facing
difficulties in holding their serves. There were more exchanges than in the
previous sets, and the 22-year-old Sinner was more effective in regaining the
lead with a score of 6-4.
Wawrinka
displayed inconsistency in his service, with a 54% first-serve percentage and
only winning 55% of them. On the other hand, Sinner had a first-serve
percentage of only 56% but managed to win 89% of those points.
The fourth
set proved to be the most advantageous for Sinner, who secured the first break
early in the set and then comfortably held his service. Another break in the
seventh game put the Italian in the lead, and he didn't falter thereafter,
sealing the match with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the
fourth round, he will face the winner of the match between the 12th seed,
Alexander Zverev, and the 19th seed, Grigor Dimitrov.
