Roger
Federer met with Team Europe captain
Bjorn Borg shortly before the start of the
Laver Cup.
In the days
leading up to the Laver Cup,
Roger Federer has been one of the tournament's key
figures as it pits Team Europe against Team World. Although the Swiss tennis
icon retired a year ago, precisely at the 2022 Laver Cup, he has been involved
in the pre-tournament activities leading up to this year's event, which begins
on Friday, September 22.
The
co-founder of the Laver Cup met with Europe's captain, former world No. 1 Bjorn
Borg, with whom he has shared moments in previous editions. Between 2017 and
2022, Borg led the European team to victory in the first four editions but
faced defeat in 2022.
Federer
played his last match alongside Rafael Nadal, and they fell to the French pair
of Tiafoe and Jack Sock by a score of 6-4, 6-7(2), 9-11. This time, he reunited
with Bjorn Borg, who selected Federer for that final match:
The 20-time
Grand Slam champion recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming tournament and
offered advice to Team Europe. With the last-minute withdrawals of world No. 4
and world No. 5 Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the team will have only two
players ranked in the top 10 to lead them.
These
players are Casper Ruud (9th) and Andrey Rublev (6th). However, Federer remains
unfazed and provided guidance to the team he has supported since 2017.
“I think
it’s [all about] thriving in the team environment, being well prepared and
embracing a big crowd. It always depends on when you play, obviously, whether
it’s opening day or the second day, but listen to the ones who have already
been at Laver Cups before, and they can give you some sound advice.” Roger
Federer said
“I’m sure
they’ll be fine. They’re all excellent players here, we’re talking about
world-class players” he added
