World No.2 and defending champion
Rafael Nadal withstood an early test from Italian
Jannik Sinner to advance to his 13th
Roland Garros semifinal.
The Spaniard required two hours and 49 minutes to defeat the reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion 7-6(4) 6-4 6-1, in a match that lasted until 1.30am Wednesday morning in Paris. Sinner had attained an impressive run during the tournament, upsetting 11th seed David Goffin and sixth seed Alexander Zverev en route to his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Sinner was able to match Nadal's groundstrokes from the baseline, as he went blow-for-blow with the Spaniard. The 19-year obtained the crucial break and served for the first set at 6-5, but was unable to put away his dogged opponent. A tiebreak ensued, with Sinner committing some forehand errors that gave the Spaniard the set.
Undaunted by his failure, the World No.75 obtained another break in the second set to lead 3-1. However, Nadal increased his aggressive play from the baseline to break back and eventually clinch the second set.
It was cruise control from that point onward, as the 12-time champion overpowered his teenage opponent during the third set. After racing to a 4-0 lead, Sinner was able to salvage a single game before Nadal sealed the victory with an impressive forehand overhead smash.
The second seed will face Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who upset third seed Dominic Thiem earlier in the day in a five set thriller. Nadal lost to Schwartzman a few weeks ago in the quarterfinals of Rome, although he does hold a 9-1 career lead against the 12th seed.
