After spending almost two years on the sidelines due to injury, Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios will be making a return to the tennis court in front of his home crowd at the 2025 Brisbane International.
The former World No.13 has been dealing with knee and wrist injuries over the past two years, which has seen him make sporadic appearances on the ATP Tour. Kyrgios was scheduled to compete at the Australian Open in 2023, but pulled out due to a knee injury that required surgery. Subsequently he was forced to pull out of the French Open later that year with a foot issue.
Kyrgios announces intentions to compete at Australian Open
The Canberra native reached his maiden singles Grand Slam final in 2022, when he faced Novak Djokovic for the title at Wimbledon. Although he fell to the Serbian, Kyrgios was primed as one of the most dangerous players on tour. However, he sustained knee and wrist injuries at the US Open that year, leading to his hiatus from the court.
After taking time off to go under the knife and recuperate, the former Wimbledon finalist is ready to make his comeback. Kyrgios appears to be on track to return, as he announced he would be competing at his home Grand Slam when the Australian Open kicks off. Prior to the event, he's set to play in the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, before travelling back home for the Brisbane International.
"Honestly, this is probably the best I've felt in two years," he told 9News Melbourne. "I played that amazing year in 2022. Then at the finals in Wimbledon and US Open, that's when I started feeling some issues in my wrist. I had that wrist reconstruction and now I'm feeling amazing. "It was a 15 miracle per cent chance that I was going to get back to playing at this level and here we are. To get back out there in front of the home fans is going to be sick."
