Day Four of the 2023 ATP Finals will get underway on Wednesday, November 14 at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, Italy. Here is our preview of the action as the Red Group continues with Carlos Alcaraz vs Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev.
First up, second seed Alcaraz will take to the court against World No. 5 Rublev at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals. The Spaniard suffered a surprise defeat to Zverev in his first Group Stage clash at the tournament, meaning he will want to keep himself in with a shot at the semi-finals by pulling off a strong performance this time around.
Meanwhile, Rublev lost his opening match against Medvedev in straight sets. The Russian has never faced Alcaraz before, but both players have experienced a lot of success this season. The latter overcame Novak Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon earlier this year and has picked up five more ATP titles in 2023. However, he was defeated by Roman Safiullin in the opening round of the Paris Masters two weeks ago and his surprise defeat to Zverev suggests he may not be on top form.
Meanwhile, Rublev won the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Swedish Open this year and has had some solid results over recent weeks, making it to the final at the Shanghai Masters and to the semi-final of the Vienna Open and Paris Masters. In Paris-Bercy, he pushed Djokovic to the limit in their semi-final clash, with the World No. 1 likening his opponent's level to a snake suffocating a frog.
Thus, it is difficult to predict who will emerge victorious from this clash. Although Rublev's recent run of form might just give him the edge, Alcaraz's first match was much tighter, meaning he could prevail from a close-knit clash here.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
Following this, the winners of the first Group Stage matches will face each other in a fight for control of the Red Group, with World No. 3 Medvedev and World No. 7 Zverev set for their eighteenth meeting. The Russian leads their head-to-head 10-7 and won their most recent clash at the China Open in straight sets. Moreover, Medvedev looked to be on good form in his match against Rublev at the ATP Finals, powering ahead to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Zverev showed resilience by fighting back from a set down against Alcaraz to defeat him 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4. The German player is also a two-time ATP Finals champion, having lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2021, while Medvedev won the title in 2020. However, Medvedev's record against Zverev this year is 4-1, suggesting that it will take even more determination for the latter to push past the third seed.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
