The ATP 500
Vienna Open is sprinting to a conclusion, with just four players remaining in the event. The number one seed
Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to reclaim his title he won back in 2023, but will have to overcome the defiant
Alex de Minaur, with Lorenzo Musetti and world number three
Alexander Zverev battling it out for a place in Sunday's final.
Jannik Sinner looks to prolong indoor win-streak
It has been hard to get the better of Sinner on whatever surface you face him on, but it seems that he is almost unbeatable when playing on an indoor hardcourt. His recent win-streak in the setting will prove this point, coming out victorious in his last 19 matches. This streak does not look to end soon, with the Italian playing some imperious tennis.
After regaining the Six Kings Slam title in a straight sets triumph over world number one and arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner has continued this ominous form into the Austrian capital. His opening match against Daniel Altmaier proved for grim reading for his rivals, sweeping the German aside in less than an hour while dropping just two games. It was slightly closer in his round-of-16 clash against fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli, but there was always going to be one winner, with the four-time Grand Slam champion sealing the win with a close tiebreaker.
He would face-off against Alexander Bublik in the quarters, with the pair once again meeting on court. Bublik is one of just three players this year who has defeated Sinner, overcoming him in the Halle Open enroute to the title. This was since then, Sinner dropped just three games against the Kazakhstani in a ruthless display at Flushing Meadows, and once again proved to have learnt his lesson after the shock defeat earlier this year.
It is business as usual for Sinner, but he will face the toughest test of this tournament so far, with de Minaur setting up a mouth-watering clash. The Aussie is looking to seal his place in the ATP Finals in Turn coming up in November. With Felix Auger-Aliassime's quarter-final defeat in the Swiss Indoors, it is looking very likely that he will join Sinner in Turn.
Straight set wins over Austrian duo Jurij Rodionov and Filip Misolic, he would then overcome former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini to set up a tie another Italian opponent. The pair have met twice in 2025, with Sinner coming out on top in both occasions, most recently in the China Open on the way to yet another title.
Musetti eyes up more success over Zverev
The second Italian to reach the semi-final stage, Musetti will hope to be the last man standing. The world number eight has failed to pick up a title since 2022, losing in his last five final appearances, first in the Monte-Carlo Masters to Alcaraz and more recently to Alejandro Tabilo in the Chengdu Open final, compounding his misery and making him more hungry for silverware.
His opening round clash against Stefanos Tsitsipas never occurred due to the two-time Grand Slam finalist withdrawing from the event. He instead faced off against lucky loser Hamad Medjedovic, defeating the Serbian in straight sets. 2-0 victories over Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Corentin Moutet sends him through to the semi-final stage, where a tough test awaits.
Zverev does not have the pressure of qualifying for the ATP Finals looming over his head like Musetti does, recently confirming his qualification for the eighth time. Previously winning the event in 2018 and 2021, the German will be hoping to travel to Turin with a second title under his belt.
He started against a familiar foe: Jacob Fearnley. Zverev had previously defeated the Brit in their three meetings this year and made no mistake in once again getting the better of Fearnley despite being engulfed into a very tense match. A more comfortable round-of-16 match against Matteo Arnaldi followed, with Zverev receiving free passage into the semi-finals after Tallon Griekspoor withdrew before their clash.
After winning their first clash in 2022, Zverev has been unable to get one over against Musetti since, losing his previous three encounters. This included their clash in the quarter-final stages of last year's event, where the Italian clawed his way back from a one-set deficit to progress.
