Second-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic put on a serve clinic on Tuesday at the Delray Beach Open, as he wasted little time in advancing to the next round.
After an
early round exit last week at the New York Open, the Canadian made quick work of Denis Istomin, dismissing the lucky loser 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 5 minutes.
Raonic won an astounding 21 of 22 points on his first serve, hitting nine aces in the process. He broke Istomin on four occasions, while saving both break points faced.
The 2017 finalist is now the top seed following Nick Kyrgios's
withdrawal due to injury, and he next faces Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the second round. The German defeated lucky loser Bernard Tomic 6-2 3-6 6-2 in his first round match.
British qualifier Cameron Norrie upset third seed Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-7(4) 6-4 in a two hour encounter that saw Norrie hit eight double faults. The Brit was somehow able to save five break points, and next faces American wildcard Brandon Nakashima in the second round.
Fourth-seeded Reilly Opelka outlasted Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-7(5) 6-4 7-6(4) in two hours and 40 minutes. The American won 88% of points on his first serve, along with 20 aces with only one double fault.
Jack Sock scored his first singles win in 15 months, upsetting defending champion Radu Albot 3-6 6-3 7-6(2) in two hours and 15 minutes. Overcome with emotion, the American was close to tears after his victory over the eighth seed.
Sixth seed Ugo Humbert fought from a set down to defeat American Stefan Kozlov 6-7(5) 6-3 6-1 and book his spot in the second round. He will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, who claimed the first set 6-2 from Jordan Thompson before the Australian retired via injury.
American Steve Johnson defeated Henri Laaksonen 7-6(5) 6-4, while compatriot Noah Rubin was leading Jason Jung 6-3 4-3 before Jung was forced to retire due to injury. Rubin will meet Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, who
upset fifth seed John Millman in the first round.
