The
Rio Open is due to take place between 16-22 February and is the 12th edition taking place at the Jockey Club Brasileiro. It is an ATP 500 tournament and is a main part of the Golden Swing.
Sebastian Baez defeated Alexandre Muller in the final last year. Baez returns as defending champion and will be one of the favourites for the title at the
Rio Open.
He will be joined by Joao Fonseca who is one of the top seeds as well as Francisco Cerundolo, Luciano Darderi, Daniel Altmaier, Muller who reached the final as well as Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego among others who joins the likes of Sonego in a heavy contingent of Italian names.
With it being an ATP 500 without many top names it is a big chance for a name like Baez or Fonseca or even someone further down to make a play for themselves.

Predictions Rio Open 2026
Samuel Gill, Head Editor for TennisUpToDate sees a winner coming from a few names.
Joao Fonseca I see as being up there in the reckoning as one of the top South Americans. Francisco Cerundolo and Sebastian Baez I also see putting in a standout display this next week.
With Thiago Seyboth Wild not involved, there is only really Fonseca on home soil to really cheer and I see the rabid crowd getting behind him but Baez and Cerundolo have form on this kind of surface.
Both are kings of South American clay and could deal with it well if Fonseca doesn't deal with the pressure.
*** Joao Fonseca
** Francisco Cerundolo, Sebastian Baez
Cristhian Avila, Editor for TennisUpToDate.com sees Joao Fonseca crowned champion.
The South American Golden Swing is always ready to offer surprises, although this time it seems difficult to find new names to challenge defending champion Joao Fonseca, an immense favorite to claim his first title at home. Without the presence of Musetti (who was slated as the first seed), the biggest challenge for Fonseca will be Francisco Cerundolo – whom he already defeated in the final of the Argentina Open a year ago.
Expect a strong showing from Sebastian Baez – former champion and the absolute king of the South American swing in recent years (4 of his 6 titles came there, including the last two Rio Opens). Among the lower-ranked players, Alejandro Tabilo and Mariano Navone will be names to watch – and also pay attention to young Peruvian talent Ignacio Buse, one of the names likely to make waves among South Americans in the coming years.
*** Joao Fonseca
** Francisco Cerundolo, Sebastian Baez
* Alejandro Tabilo, Mariano Navone, Ignacio Buse
Theo Stodiek, Editor for TennisAktuell.DE sees it as wide open.
Next week’s Rio Open feels wide open on the clay of the Jockey Club Brasileiro, and for me Sebastian Baez is the man to beat. The two‑time defending champion has made this tournament his personal fortress, combining relentless defense, heavy topspin and a real affinity for the Rio conditions.
His biggest challengers will come from the Argentine group: Francisco Cerundolo, the number one seed, brings solid clay‑court form after a strong showing in Buenos Aires, while Luciano Darderi has already proven he can beat top players on this surface and will be hungry for another deep run. On his way to the final in Buenos Aires, the Italian has already defeated Baez, so he will be very confident of doing so again and dethroning the defending champion.
Among the outsiders, Daniel Altmaier stands out. The German has struggled to start 2026 with three first round losses including an exit in Buenos Aires, but his agression, heavy topspin and one‑handed backhand can work very well on clay. João Fonseca and Gael Monfils add further unpredictability, yet my pick for the title remains Baez.

** Francisco Cerundolo, Luciano Darderi
