Dominic Thiem and
Diego Schwartzman booked spots in the
Roland Garros quarterfinals after victories over Gaston and Sonego.
The first set was a good one by both players but as it moved on Thiem started getting the upper hand. Ultimately he broke Gaston midway through to set to take the lead which he then maintained to win the set 6-4. The second set more or less followed the same path but this time Gaston looked even better than in the first set. But once again he could not withstand Theim when he turned it on. Such a moment occurred midway through the set when he lost his serve to Thiem who once again won the set 6-4.
The 3rd set was a bit different as Gaston continued to play well while Thiem looked a bit worse. Such a development allowed Gaston to break Dominic early in the set to take a 3-1 lead. He gave it up immediately with Theim striking back to make it 3-3. Gaston continued playing well through the set threatening Thiem several times with a break and even had a set point which Dominic all saved.
Ultimately he did lose the set 7-5 which started a slip for Thiem which continued well into the next set which Thiem also lost. Both of these sets were lost due to a lot of mistakes made especially in the 4th where Thiem committed 3 times as many mistakes as Gaston. The final set was a calm one for most of it, as both of them handled their service game with ease. Late in the set Gaston allowed Thiem a chance and Dominic broke him to take a 5-3 lead which became a 6-3 final set victory.
Diego Schwartzman also pulled through against Lorenzo Sonego in straigh sets. It took the Argentinian 2 hours to overcome the Italian. The end result was 6-1 6-3 6-4. It was a rather straigh forward match for Diego who only had issues in the final set when he trailled Sonego for a game or two. It was a well rounded effort from Schwartzman who played a patient brand of tennis forcing Sonego to make a lot of mistakes (47). He added 15 winners and one ace to that effort and it proved enough.
