The men's US Open final line-up is complete, as Dominic Thiem will face Alexander Zverev for the title on Sunday.
The Austrian had to go through 2019 runner-up
Daniil Medvedev, as the two clashed late Friday night on Arthur Ashe Stadium. In a highly anticipated semifinal, Thiem was able to dig deep and advance with a 6-2 7-6(7) 7-6(5) victory.
The second seed acquired the crucial break in the first set, following a disruption in play due to a challenge by Medvedev. The Russian seemed thrown off following the challenge, which allowed Thiem to obtain a second break and easily claim the first set.
Not one to be easily daunted, Medvedev regrouped easily and broke Thiem in the second set. However, he failed to serve out the set, allowing the second seed back into the match. After saving a set point in the tiebreak, Thiem employed his aggressive forehand to clinch the second set.
Perhaps feeling the effects of the long rallies, the Austrian received a medical timeout at the end of the second set to treat his left ankle. Medvedev was quick to capitalize on this, as he made his opponent scamper around the court during the third set. After obtaining another break but failing to serve out the set at 5-3, another tiebreak ensued. A forehand error from Medvedev handed Thiem the match, allowing him to progress to his fourth Grand Slam final.
Thiem will now face Zverev in the final, following the German's
spectacular comeback in his semifinal match. The Austrian holds a 7-2 lead over Zverev, and has won their last three encounters.
