The World No.7 faced a determined Pablo Carreno Busta, who was also looking to reach his first Grand Slam final. Although the Spaniard acquired a two sets to love lead, Zverev pulled off an incredible comeback to claim a 3-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-3 victory.
Carreno Busta seemed to be in control from the start, moving Zverev around the court with well-angled shots. Furthermore, the German committed several unnecessary unforced errors as he struggled to limit his double faults. Regardless, it came as a surprise when Carreno Busta raced through the first set and acquired a 5-0 lead in the second before his opponent put some games on the board.
However, there was a drastic shift in momentum during the third set as Zverev obtained an early break and found his rhythm. His court coverage improved, as he retrieved every ball and began hitting winners from both wings. The fifth seed won the third and fourth sets, as Carreno Busta struggled to maintain his poise.
The final set saw Zverev grab the crucial break, as he continued to hit several of his 71 winners. His booming serves rattled the 20th seed, as the German hit 24 during the match. After three hours and 22 minutes, a Carreno Busta backhand found the net and Zverev laughed almost in disbelief as he advanced to his first Grand Slam final.
Having never gone past the fourth round of the US Open, Zverev now has the opportunity to claim his maiden Major trophy. Standing in his way is the winner between the second men's semifinal, as Dominic Thiem takes on Daniil Medvedev in what should be a blockbuster affair.
