The American was pushed hardest in the opening set, where he faced two set points at 4-6 in the tiebreak, but responded by winning the final four points to escape with a crucial advantage.

That escape appeared to give Michelsen even more confidence. He became increasingly aggressive from the baseline, used his serve to keep Etcheverry under pressure and regularly moved forward to finish points at the net. The Argentine struggled to create opportunities after the opening set, while Michelsen needed only one break in each of the final two sets to take control.

Michelsen closed out the victory after two hours and 46 minutes, finishing with 44 winners and 12 aces. His reward is an all-American quarterfinal against Frances Tiafoe, meaning he will now play for a place in his first Grand Slam semifinal.

Frances Tiafoe produced one of the biggest wins of his US Open campaign by defeating seventh seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. The American had previously beaten the former world No. 1 only once in seven meetings, but he delivered an inspired performance on Louis Armstrong Stadium, repeatedly disrupting Medvedev with his aggressive tennis and willingness to come forward.

The first set went all the way to a tiebreak, where Tiafoe dominated 7-1 and immediately put Medvedev under pressure. The American then secured the only break of the second set to move within one set of victory, although Medvedev continued to make him work for every point and remained dangerous from the baseline.

Ben Shelton continued his strong US Open campaign with another commanding straight-sets victory, this time against Stefanos Tsitsipas. The American took control early and never allowed the Greek to settle into the match, using his serve and explosive left-handed forehand to keep points on his terms.

Tsitsipas struggled to find enough consistency to challenge Shelton, particularly when trying to protect his service games under pressure. Shelton kept creating opportunities on return while remaining aggressive behind his own delivery, building a lead that Tsitsipas was unable to overturn.
