This year's
US Open will be lacking in star power as several superstars have withdrawn due to injury, most notably tennis legends
Serena Williams,
Roger Federer and
Rafael Nadal.
The aforementioned athletes have been a staple at Grand Slam events over the years, with at least one of the trio present to entertain fans during a Major tournament. However, for the first time since 1997, none of them will be competing at a Grand Slam event.
Federer recently underwent knee surgery after suffering an injury during the grass court season, and revealed he would miss many months, effectively ending his 2021 season. Likewise, Nadal announced he would be ending his season early due to a left foot injury that had been bothering him all year. Serena Williams was slated to compete at the US Open, but pulled out a few days before the event, citing a leg injury.
These three superstars are not the only players to withdraw from the last Major of the year, as defending champion
Dominic Thiem announced he would not be competing at this year's event due to injury. Additionally, two-time champion
Venus Williams also announced her withdrawal from the event due to a leg injury.
