Jannik Sinner shared his thoughts after a remarkable victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the opening match of the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
The local tennis star brought joy to the Turin crowd with an impressive performance against the Greek player. Stefanos Tsitsipas appeared solid from the baseline, showing no signs of the physical discomfort he experienced during the week's practice sessions. However, Sinner took command with his forehand and capitalized on his opponent's errors in crucial moments.
The World No. 4 took an hour and 25 minutes to defeat the 2019 ATP Finals champion, securing a 6-4, 6-4 victory and notching his 58th triumph of the season, trailing only behind Medvedev (64) and Alcaraz (63).
After the match, Sinner expressed his excitement about playing the opening match of the Finals in front of his home crowd.
"I was excited to step on court and opening the Finals is really, really special," he said.
"I knew it was going to be very tough but I think I handled the situation well. I tried to stay aggressive and I am very happy with the performance. I am happy to start off with a win and hopefully I can continue with this intensity," Sinner added.
Sinner had previously entered the Finals in 2021 as an alternate, securing a victory against Hubert Hurkacz. However, this time, he earned direct qualification as the fourth seed. The 22-year-old rising star highlighted the contrast of playing indoors
“It is a special week,". "We play under a roof, so it is nosier and playing with this crowd is such a special feeling. I tried to be really happy on the court and really focused."
With his victory, Sinner starts the tournament leading his group, which he shares with Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic. They will face each other in the second match of the day.
