Pablo
Carreño Busta will drop out of the top-100 rankings after missing the Canadian
Open.
The Spanish
tennis player has been absent from the ATP tour due to muscle injuries and an
elbow injury. At 32 years old, he has had a challenging 2023 season, with only
4 matches played and a 1-3 win-loss record. His sole victory came in the first
round of the Australian Open against Pedro Cachin.
Just before
the start of the
Canadian Open, Carreño Busta will lament missing the chance to
defend the title he won in 2022.
His journey
in Montreal was the best result of his career, as he claimed his only Masters
1000 title by defeating the Polish player Hubert Hurkacz in the final. Along
the way, he defeated strong opponents such as Matteo Berrettini, Holger Rune,
Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper, and Daniel Evans, which allowed him to reach the
world No. 13 ranking.
However,
due to his limited playing time, he will fall from the position he held a year
ago and drop out of the top-100 for the first time since 2013, completing 10
years among the world's top 100 players.
In the last
year, Carreño Busta has kept a low profile and has had little activity on
social media, although recently he has been seen practicing at the Juan Carlos
Ferrero Tennis Academy for the first time in almost three months. The official
account of the academy shared images of Carreño Busta training
“11 weeks
without hitting a ball and more than 6 months with pain. We are so happy to see you healthy again! @pablo_carreno_.What a
birthday present! Step by step you will come back stronger! 💪🏻Vamos Pablo!”
Despite
expectations of his return to defend the title, it has recently been confirmed
that Pablo Carreño Busta will be absent from the Canadian Open. It is hoped
that he will be able to make a comeback after the Masters 1000 Cincinnati Open
and ATP 250 Winston-Salem, in order to prepare for his participation in the US
Open the following week.
Currently,
Carreño Busta holds the second-highest ranking among Spanish tennis players,
behind world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. However, due to his absence from the
tournaments, he will cede that position to 35-year-old Roberto Bautista Agut.
