Alexander Zverev is the first finalist of the
Madrid Open after taking down
Dominic Thiem in straight sets.
The German continued his run of excellence at the Madrid Open defeating Dominic Thiem 6-3 6-4 in 98 minutes of play. Just like in 2018, Zverev was the better player and he deservedly won this match. Thiem has played well at this event but today his level was far off from his usual Madrid Open level.
Thiem did not actually play too bad today but Zverev was able to handle the pressure the Austrian put on him in rallies which completely disrupted the rhythm of Thiem. The German also served better throughout the match as he generally does possess the bigger serve and the Madrid altitude favours big servers.
He hit 6 aces compared to Thiem's one and he was able to keep Thiem at bay on his serve. He allowed only two breaks points and saved one but the one he lost was late in the 2nd set when he was a double break up. In the end, it was more than enough for Zverev to emerge as the victor.
He will face either Ruud or Berrettini in the final tomorrow and the way he played he will have a great chance to repeat his result from 2018 when he became the champion,
