Day 4 in Melbourne is successful for seeded players so far. Daniil Medvedev started the day with a victory over Pedro Martinez and Sascha Zverev, Andrey Rublev and Dominic Thiem followed him into the next round.
The oldest of the four players, Dominic Thiem had the most difficult journey into the 3rd round. He faced home player Alex Bolt who was supported by the Australian fans. Thiem took an early lead in the match by winning the first set 6-2. However, Bolt managed to grab a 2-1 lead in the match by winning the second and third set. But the Austrian showed experience late in the match by dominating in the 4th set, winning it 6-1. Later, he decided in the 5th set with a 6-2 victory to book his 3rd round spot. World number 5 will meet the winner of the match between Taylor Fritz and Kevin Anderson in the next round.
The other two youngsters did not need to spend that much time on the court. In Rod Laver Arena, Alexander Zverev faced Egor Gerasimov. The German managed to win another 3 sets in a row in Melbourne as he continues in a good form. Zverev defeated Gerasimov 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5 after two hours and 20 minutes.
Andrey Rublev was even faster than Zverev. The Russian is undefeated this season when he first triumphed in Doha and then added the title in Adelaide. At the Australian Open, Rublev continues in almost flawless performances as the defeated Yuchi Sugita in 3 sets.
The tenth-seeded Gael Monfils will be also playing the third round in Melbourne. He defeated Ivo Karlovic after 2 hours and 36 minutes 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4, 7-5. Monfils will be facing Ernest Gulbis, who defeated Aljaz Bedene in 3 sets today, in the next round.
