The Quarter-Finals are the name of the game on Wednesday at the Miami Open with the WTA side being completed and the ATP completing their first two matches as the business end gets setup.
Our preview looks ahead to the four ties on offer on Wednesday at the Miami Open with Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Jessica Pegula all in action.
Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev in their run through will play back-to-back matches with Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev's Quarter-Finals pencilled in for Thursday. But it is the third WTA Quarter-Final which is up first with Caroline Garcia who dumped out Coco Gauff aiming to back it up.
She will have a certain Danielle Collins in her sights. The American is due to retire at the end of the year, but is showing why perhaps that decision will be questioned with her recent form. She has lost one set all tournament in the opening round to Bernarda Pera and most of her other wins have come with 6-1 set scorelines. Being a Florida native, it could yet be the fairytale final year title that she deserves. Or Garcia could end that idea.
Garcia though will have the task of backing up her win against Gauff and if she does, it will be a real return to form for the former World No.4 and WTA Finals champion. With Victoria Azarenka and Elena Rybakina already through, the second tie will be set up.
Interspersed between the ATP Quarter-Finals will be Jessica Pegula facing off against Ekaterina Alexandrova. The former has found some of her magic again this week on home soil with the WTA's most consistent player previously struggling in 2024 so far with coaching changes, illness and injuries and will be helped in the next tie slightly in a similar vein to Garcia in that it will not be Iga Swiatek and it will be Alexandrova meaning the Russian has to back up her prior win.
Prior to that, Jannik Sinner continues his campaign when he takes on Tomas Machac who is having the week of his life. But aside from losing to Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells, the Italian has been in the mood to stop dreams and has continued his form on. Machac's upturn has come amid a 6-5 record so far this year compared to 16-1 for Sinner who will be the big favourite to defeat the World No.60.
The second Quarter-Final is perhaps less clean cut with Medvedev liking to get embroiled in a real tussle and his opponent being a formidable one in Nicolas Jarry. Since returning from his ban, the Chilean has surged towards the top 20 at great pace and took down Casper Ruud last round who will likely just be relieved to be heading towards the clay court season. So will Jarry when he gets there but amid gruelling wins over Jack Draper and Thiago Seyboth Wild this week, the former from the brink, it is sometimes the luck you need.
Medvedev took his 350th career win against Dominik Koepfer yesterday and hasn't gone three sets yet surprisingly. He currently holds a 1-0 Head to Head over Jarry albeit on clay back in 2019 in Barcelona. So in Jarry's case not even close to his best so it is very much game on this evening.
