Stefanos Tsitsipas has rehired his former coach Mark Philippoussis after originally parting ways with him two months ago.
World No. 5 Tsitsipas began working with former top 10 player Philippoussis in February 2020, and the pair seemed to be working well together.
In 2021, the Greek player reached the final of the
French Open, and in 2022 he won his first title on grass courts at the Mallorca Championsips.
Split came as part of 'less is more' approach
In May 2023, Tsitsipas announced that he had split from Philippoussis, saying
"I’m at a phase of my career in life where I need one coach that can provide all the information, all the analysis, all of the things that I’m looking for to improve my game. Less is more, in my opinion."
The 'one coach' he was referring to was his father Apostolos Tsitsipas, who also coaches him on the
ATP Tour. Nevertheless, Stefanos maintained at the time that he still had a good relationship with Philippoussis,
"I love Mark. He’s an amazing person, and we still stay in touch with him very often.
"I guess, you know, that’s how it’s going to be from now on, and I’m happy with this decision. Of course I’m sure he supports me, and he’s there for me whenever I need anything. That’s it."
Pair have started a new arrangement
Despite this new approach, Philippoussis was recently spotted in Los Cabos with Tsitsipas, and the player confirmed soon afterwards that the pair had began working together again.
However, the 24-year-old insists that he still believes in the 'less is more' approach, meaning that he has had to reach a new arrangement with his former coach. According to SDNA, Philippoussis will take it in turns with Apostolos to accompany Tsitsipas to tournaments, and it is expected that the former will be the one to be present in Los Cabos, Toronto and Cincinnati.
There is one exception though, and that is Grand Slams, where both coaches will be there to help him. This means that Philippoussis and Apostolos are both expected to attend the upcoming
US Open.
