Paula Badosa has shared a heartfelt update after she was forced to end her 2023 season due to injury ahead of the
US Open.
Former World No. 2 Badosa has been dealing with injuries throughout the season. Back in January, she withdrew from the
Australian Open due to an abductor injury sustained at the Adelaide International.
The Spanish player was then forced to pull out of the
French Open due to a stress fracture in the L4 vertebra. While she was able to play in
Wimbledon, she ended up having to retire in her second-round match against Marta Kostyuk.
Badosa hopes to 'learn and grow' from setbacks
Unfortunately, things did not get better for Badosa in the run-up to the US Open and she ultimately decided to withdraw and end her season. She announced the decision on her Instagram ahead of the New York Slam.
"After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season. Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision.
"We have tried everything together with my team but the pain is not letting me move forward. Thanks to the people who are still by my side in these hard times. See you next year, stronger than ever," she said.
Now, the 25-year-old has reflected on her injury setbacks and spoken of the difficulties that she has experienced in being away for so long. However, she was also optimistic about returning to the sport she loves. She shared a picture of her smiling on the court on her Instagram page, captioning it:
"One of my favorite pics… I’ve never missed something more than this sport.
Since I’m a little girl I’ve never experienced so many months away from it. All this time off I realize that setbacks are part life and it’s a way to learn and grow. It’s really tough being away for so long but hopefully sooner than later I’m that little girl playing and enjoying it again."
