Petra Kvitova has revealed why she chose to keep her maiden name after getting married to her longtime coach Jiri Vanek in July.
Two-time
Wimbledon champion Kvitova has made a strong start to her campaign at this year's
US Open, defeating Cristina Busca in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5), to progress through to the second round of the Grand Slam.
The major in New York is only the third tournament that the Czech player has participated in since she got married last month. In a recent interview with iSport.cz, Kvitova revealed several details about her wedding day and why she chose to keep her own last name.
Kvitova says fans would not remember her married name
When asked about her choice to keep her name the same, Kvitova joked that people would not remember her new name if she were to change it.
"Of course, I will remain Kvitova. It's not even worth changing, no one will remember it anyway," she said.
The 33-year-old then proceeded to reflect on her wedding day, saying that it took a while for her to process that she was actually married but it was nice to spend time with loved ones.
"The first days after the wedding, I felt a little strange that I was married," she said, "But gradually I got used to it. I won the first match, which was important for everyone. Mainly for me. The wedding day was amazing, I'm sure everyone enjoyed it with us. Really great, even the weather held out for us. A beautiful day."
Kvitova also revealed that she 'didn't have the capacity' to think about getting married while competing at tournaments, but let the wedding day 'flow.'
"I rather let it flow. At the tournaments, I didn't have the thoughts or the capacity to get married. That's what Jirka was saying: Look, in a month. He was counting down his freedom," she continued.
