Holger Rune has returned to training and confirmed his plans for the Asian swing after dealing with a back injury that forced him out of Denmark's run at the
Davis Cup.
The World No. 4 had a difficult summer on the
ATP Tour. He was defeated in the first round of the National Bank Canadian Open in Toronto by Marcos Giron before retiring from his opening match against Mackenzie McDonald at the Cincinnati Masters due to a back injury.
The Dane then suffered a shocking early exit at the US Open, losing to Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round. He then went on to play as part of Denmark's Davis Cup squad but had to withdraw from the fourth match tie against Brazil. He was defeated by Thiago Monteiro before pulling out and being replaced by Elmer Møller.
After this, Rune's mother Aneke revealed the extent of his injury.
"That's why he couldn't finish the match yesterday. It hurts every time he pushes for the serve. And large doses of ibuprofen haven't worked. So, he needs to have an injection in his back to address the inflammation that's there now," she said.
Rune back to training and 'excited' for China Open
However, the 20-year-old appears to be on the right track as he shared a clip of him training on social media. He also shared his excitement for the upcoming Asian Swing as he revealed that he would soon be traveling to Beijing for the ATP 500 China Open.
"Back on court happy, could hit forehands forever, leaving for @ChinaOpen tonight #excited," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. In the 14-second clip, Rune can be seen practicing his shots.
His fans reacted to the post with delight.
"Glad to see you back on court!" wrote one.
"Looking crisp, future #1," added another.
