Jelena Ostapenko let out a cry of joy after defeating
Elina Avanesyan in the second round of the
US Open.
Twentieth seed Ostapenko had made a good start at the last Grand Slam of the year in Flushing Meadows, defeating Italian player
Jasmine Paolini. Although she lost the second set, Ostapenko was able to take a commanding 6-1 lead in the final set to get through to a second round clash with world No. 66 Avanesyan.
The Latvian started out well, winning the first set 6-3 before coming up against some difficulty. The 26-year-old was up by a set and 5-2 when Avanesyan made a comeback to win the second set 7-5. However, Ostapenko was able to bring it back in the third set, ultimately winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Ostapenko gives 'priceless' reaction
In the final moments of the match, Ostapenko hit the winning point and immediately let out a cry that indicated just how tense the match had been.
Throughout the second round she committed 80 unforced errors, meaning part of her emotions in that moment were probably relief. Meanwhile, the commentators expressed their disbelief.
"The only word that comes to mind is inexplicable. How did Ostapenko win that match?" one said with a laugh.
Fans conveyed their surprise and awe on social media, with The Tennis Letter writing:
"Jelena Ostapenko’s reaction after beating Elina Avanesyan is priceless.
This is the yell of a woman who was up by a set and 5-2 & almost watched it all fall apart.
80 unforced errors & looking like a proud mother.
Warrior of a woman right here."
"Lol She‘s quite the character, but I like #Ostapenko, she’s hilarious! Btw she’s one of my ‘dark horses’," added another.
"Ostapenko’s passion," commented a third, followed by a tennis ball and a flame emoji.
Ostapenko will go on to face American player
Bernarda Pera in the third round of the US Open.
