Naomi Osaka has praised
Coco Gauff during the latter's continued success at the
US Open, saying she hopes that her child will see the young player 'as a role model.'
World No. 6 Gauff has been proving to everyone why she is the home favorite at this year's New York major, ousting the likes of Mirra Andreeva, Caroline Wozniacki, and Jelena Ostapenko to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career.
Moreover, many fans have noted how the 19-year-old has been managing the hype around her with maturity and class. Now, two-time US Open champion Osaka has added to these voices, calling Gauff 'such a good person.'
Osaka praises Gauff's personality on and off court
In a recent interview with ESPN, the Japanese player praised Gauff's behavior and personality both on and off the court.
"I don't know if I would be bold enough to say I mentored her but I’m always really proud of everything that she does. She seems like such a good person. Just everything that she’s doing and speaking out about so many different topics," she said.
The 25-year-old also said that the American player was someone she hoped her daughter Shai, whom she gave birth to in July of this year, would grow up to see as a role model.
"I think it’s something that I'd love to have my kid to look up to her as a role model," she added.
Osaka talks of 2024 return
Osaka will miss all of the 2023 season due to her pregnancy but has said that she plans to return in 2024, explaining that she will be taking on a heavier workload than in the past.
"It's definitely way more tournaments than I used to play so I think some people will be happy with that.
"Honestly, I think it's because I realize that I don't know how the beginning of the year is going to go for me. Like, I don't know the level of play. I think I kind of have to ease into it so at the very least I'm going to set myself up for a very good end of the year," she said.
