16-year-old Russian prodigy,
Mirra Andreeva has continued her superb rise by reaching the third round for a second straight Grand Slam. This time at
Wimbledon.
Andreeva who had to qualify to play Wimbledon had never even played on grass before but has taken to it like a duck to water.
Facing Barbora Krejcikova, a former Grand Slam champion and 10th seed, she showed no nerves before receiving a walk-over in the second set.
She was leading Krejcikova 6-3, 4-0 and will now aim to reach the second week for the first time in her latest milestone.
Next will be her compatriot, Anastasia Potapova or Kaja Juvan in the third round. She has also gone from 312th in the world to 80th in the matter of six tournaments with her rise only set to continue seemingly.
Muchova curse returns as Azarenka continues return to form
It was a poor hour or so for Czech women's tennis with
Karolina Muchova also falling to
Jule Niemeier.
A proficient grass court player who reached the Quarter-Finals last year, she was a victim like Elena Rybakina and her compatriot Tatjana Maria of not getting the ranking points she deserved for that run in 2022.
Now she gets to build and of course won't defend anything either so it will only be progression for the German.
While for Muchova, it goes from the highest of highs to the return of her poor luck as she lost 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 and in the third set, she fell badly and hurt herself getting injured again.
Another player just through snapping a poor run as of late was
Victoria Azarenka with the 19th seed who has been in horrific form as of late since reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open finding it again.
As ever during a Grand Slam, but it was a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nadia Podoroska. Next is a top tie against Daria Kasatkina likely to grace a bigger court.
