Legendary tennis player
Roger Federer is hoping to see Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic break his
Wimbledon record.
The 41-year-old holds the record for winning the most number
of Grand Slam titles on the grass court (8).
Currently, the world number two, who is also the defending
champion, is second on the list with seven Wimbledon titles to his name.
Federer, who was the first player in the history of men’s
singles tennis in the Open era to win 20 Grand Slam titles, spoke recently
about his rivalry with the Serbian star and expressed optimism to see him
break his record at Wimbledon as well.
“Nowadays it's very media-driven,” he said. “I was driven by
breaking records but as you sit back, you have a new perspective. You're just
proud of your achievements. I hope he does it [breaks my Wimbledon record].
Anything more he does adds to tennis history.”
Djokovic has a phenomenal record while playing at Wimbledon as he has been a defending champion since the 2018 edition after winning the title four consecutive times.
The 36-year-old’s last defeat in the competition came way
back in the 2017 edition where he was knocked out as he had to retire because
of an arm injury while playing against Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.
The Belgrade-born has been in red-hot form in the ongoing
campaign as well where he has already defeated Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in the first
round (6-3, 6-3, 7-6) and Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the second round (6-3,
7-6, 7-5).
He will now face Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in the third
round of the competition on Friday.
