The Mutua Madrid Open has confirmed its wildcard allocations for the 2026 edition, with Venus Williams headlining the selections as the 45-year-old prepares for a return to clay. The American, currently ranked No. 476, enters the WTA 1000 event without a win this season, but remains the central figure among the invited players as the European clay swing reaches one of its key stops.
Williams’ inclusion carries additional weight given her absence from clay in recent years. She has not competed on the surface since 2021 and arrives on the back of an eight-match losing streak on clay, a run that stretches from Rome 2019 through Roland Garros 2021. Her last victory on the surface came in Rome, where she defeated Elise Mertens in three sets.
The Madrid Open now offers a direct return to top-level competition without the need for qualifying, placing her immediately into a field that will include the leading names of the tour. It marks a rare appearance on clay in the closing phase of her career and introduces uncertainty around her competitive level after an extended absence from the surface.
Her history in Madrid is limited in recent years. Williams last appeared in the tournament in 2021, where she was defeated in the opening round. The wildcard now resets that timeline, positioning her once again inside a main draw at WTA 1000 level despite minimal recent activity.

A symbolic return led by Venus, with Badosa and Monfils in supporting roles

While Williams remains the headline, the wildcard list also includes several notable names across both tours. Paula Badosa features among the WTA main draw selections, offering a home storyline within the Spanish event as she looks to rebuild consistency during the clay swing.
On the ATP side, Gael Monfils continues what is expected to be the final stretch of his career. The 39-year-old, ranked outside the Top 150, has maintained a selective schedule and recently competed in Monte-Carlo, where he secured a first-round win before exiting in the second round.
The combination of established figures and returning players defines the wildcard distribution. In both draws, the selections balance experience with opportunity, particularly at a stage of the season where physical readiness and adaptation to clay become decisive factors.

Clay context frames expectations for veteran return

For Williams, the competitive context remains clear. Clay has historically been her least productive surface, with no WTA 1000 titles and limited deep runs compared to her achievements on hard and grass courts. Her success on clay has been sporadic, with titles at lower-tier events and a Roland Garros semi-final earlier in her career.
The current version of Williams arrives under different conditions. With limited match play in 2026 and no recent clay appearances, her participation is shaped more by presence than expectation. The Madrid Open, however, provides a structured environment within a high-level field, offering a direct benchmark against the tour’s leading players.
For Badosa, the setting offers a different type of opportunity. Competing on home soil during the clay swing provides a chance to stabilise results in a familiar environment, particularly after periods of inconsistency across recent months.
Monfils, meanwhile, adds a parallel narrative on the men’s side. His inclusion reflects both his history with the tournament and the final phase of his career, where appearances at major events carry added significance regardless of ranking position.
