Peyton Stearns claimed the ATX Open crown in Austin on Sunday evening, overcoming
Taylor Townsend 7-6(8), 7-5 in a tightly contested all-American final. The match swung repeatedly in both sets, with Townsend twice serving for control of the opener before Stearns reversed momentum and ultimately sealed victory with a late break in the second.
The title is Stearns’ second at WTA level and her first on hard courts, reinforcing her upward trajectory inside the Top 100. Ranked No. 62 entering the week, she is projected to climb to No. 48 in the next update. For Townsend, the defeat ends a breakthrough singles campaign. The 29-year-old, ranked No. 119 in singles but established as world No. 3 in doubles, was contesting the first WTA singles final of her career.
Opening set defined by missed chances
Townsend made the sharper start. Her left-handed delivery created early angles, and she secured the first break of the match in Stearns’ opening service game. With first-serve accuracy high and points kept short through selective net approaches, she dictated play through the first half of the set, moved ahead 5-3, and held two set points
Both opportunities went away through unforced errors, and that moment shifted the dynamic. Stearns, who had faced 3-5, 15-40, responded with a sustained run of points (12 of the next 13), tightening her baseline patterns and raising her first-serve efficiency. She broke back to level at 5-5 and ensured the set would be decided under maximum pressure.
The tie-break reflected the overall balance of the contest. Stearns earned three set points at 6-3 but could not convert immediately. Townsend countered, extending rallies and forcing errors to draw level. Ultimately, Stearns’ heavier forehand and improved depth in neutral exchanges allowed her to edge ahead, converting her sixth set point to close the breaker 10-8 after 74 minutes.
Statistically, the difference began to emerge on second serve. Townsend won just 32% of her second-serve points across the match, while Stearns maintained 55%, a margin that proved significant in extended exchanges.
Composure under pressure decides second set
The second set unfolded with fewer extended swings but continued tension. Both players held comfortably early, though Townsend’s first-serve percentage dipped below the level she had established in the opening stages. Stearns capitalised at 3-2, breaking after drawing errors in longer rallies that exposed Townsend’s defensive movement behind the baseline.
Townsend responded immediately, breaking back to level at 4-4 through more aggressive returning. For a brief period, momentum appeared evenly balanced again, with both players trading solid service games and avoiding unnecessary risks.
At 5-5, however, margins narrowed. Stearns maintained discipline from the baseline, using controlled depth rather than outright pace to construct points. When Townsend served at 5-6 to stay in the match, Stearns stepped inside the court on second-serve returns and secured the decisive break. She finished with eight aces and won 75% of her service games, reinforcing the stability of her delivery under pressure.
Serving for the title, Stearns avoided extended exchanges and closed efficiently. A Townsend unforced error on match point ended the contest in straight sets.

For Stearns, it means leaving behind several months of irregular results that had caused her to drop sharply in the rankings. She will return to the Top 50 and position herself at No. 48 — her best ranking since August 2025.
On the other hand, Townsend missed the opportunity to be crowned champion in what was her first final as a professional. Nevertheless, she completes a strong week, showing that she has the level to compete in singles and securing a rise of more than 30 positions in the rankings to No. 87 — ensuring her return to the Top 100 for the first time since July 2025.
