While the WTA season is all but over, the
Billie Jean King Cup play-offs hold the key for next season as Canada and Australia aim to propel themselves back into the finals and they have two rising stars to thank for wins over night as
Maya Joint for Australia and
Victoria Mboko for Canada starred.
Joint saved a match point to propel Australia to victory over Brazil and to take their place in next year's Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers. After Australia defeated Portugal in Hobart, they also won their opening match of their tie against Brazil with Joint needing a win over Laura Pigossi.
Albeit it wasn't as simple as is often the case in these Billie Jean King Cup ties where country pride leads to players often playing out of their skin and for Joint, she lost the opening set but rallied superbly to seal the win. She won 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
She struggled with the expectation early on as she lost serve twice in the first set before falling 3-5 down in the second set as it looked like it was going to go to the decisive doubles. But with Pigossi serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set and having a match point came the no fear attitude as the Australian saved a match point and electrified winning eight games in a row to open up a 7-5, 5-0 lead over Pigossi.
She served out the match from there to seal an epic comeback as they move through to next year. This after Kimberly Birrell took down Nauhany Vitoria Leme da Silva, the rising Brazilian is certainly one to watch at the age of 15. But she was defeated in three as Birrell claimed it 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Mboko leads Canadian front as pivotal Mexico tie awaits
While Victoria Mboko also led from the front for team Canada who were previous winners of this tournament just two years ago but found themselves in the qualifies this time. They edged past Denmark sealing a fightback on Saturday winning 2-1 in their first play-off tie.
Cadence Brace was defeated in the opening singles match giving them a bit of an uphill battle but thankfully they had Mboko who won her singles match and then sealed doubles victory with Gabriela Dabrowski.
She won 7-5, 6-3 over Johanne Svendsen who also played doubles in the finale too. Mboko overcame a slow start in her singles to give them a lifeline winning the opening set 7-5 before a more comfortable second 6-3. She won 86% of her first serve points and did not face a break point after her second service game. She created 12 break point chances on Svendsen's serve and converted five.
This after she failed to capitalise on break point chances to begin the opening set before Svendsen broke for 2-0. The Canadian broke herself only to fall behind 15-40 in the next service game before being broken again. Svendsen went 5-2 up but Mboko like Joint for Australia saved set points and rallied. She won 15 out of the last 17 points in the set breaking back when the Dane double faulted. She held to love to go 6-5 up and served it out from there.
She found her mojo in the second set and weathered an early back and forth to seal the win before they played out a near perfect doubles 6-2, 6-4 against Svendsen and Kamper. Without the likes of Fernandez and Andreescu but another important win as they head into Sunday facing the hosts Mexico needing a win to claim the spot.
