After coming very close to winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2022 French Open, Coco Gauff believes she has what it takes to finally claim her first Major trophy on clay.
Gauff stunned the tennis community by reaching the Roland Garros final three years ago, at just 18 years of age. However, she was unable to overcome the red-hot Iga Swiatek, who has been thoroughly dominant on the red dirt.
The top-ranked American has vastly improved since her defeat in Paris, winning her first Grand Slam title at the US Open the following year. Furthermore, Gauff has ascended to the World No.2 ranking, in addition to defeating Swiatek on multiple occasions. However, she is yet to beat the Polish star on clay.
“I think for me, well, because my head-to-head with her was more so just about beating her, period," said Gauff in an interview with the official Roland Garros website. "But yeah, I haven't really gotten to think about that. I do think I am a good player on clay. And I know that if I want to win that tournament, I have to probably beat her, most likely.
"I think it's more so just training to be the best version of myself. And I think that that's the way I have been training. And with my results against her in the past, it has not turned out my way. She's an unbelievable talent, on any surface, but especially on clay.
"So that would be a goal to win this tournament just because I did make the final. So I feel like I have a lot of unfinished business there. And yeah, she's definitely the number one person to beat when it comes to playing at Roland-Garros.”
The World No.3 turns 21 on Thursday, March 13 and has turned her sights to the Miami Open following a round of 16 loss at Indian Wells.
