Katie Boulter looking to get back to her best form
A year ago, Katie Boulter was the 22nd seed for the Australian Open. After a 2025 of poor results, she has missed out on a place in the main draw, dropping out of the top 104.
The former British number one had progressed up the standings in recent times, becoming a regular in big events and seeded for a number of major tournaments. She was leading the line for British talent on the WTA, collecting three titles between 2023 and 2024 including a brace at the Nottingham Open. She also finished 2024 with a defeat in the Hong Kong Open final to Diana Shnaider. These ranking points coming off her tally had almost sealed her doom. It is the first time since the 2023 French Open where she has not made the main draw for a Grand Slam tournament.
If the 29-year-old wants to make a sixth appearance at the Australian Open, she will need to come through a brutal qualifying session at Melbourne Park, with three wins enough for her to return to the main draw.
In November, she had a very tough decision to make. With her body not at 100% due to a hip injury sustained at the end of the Asian swing, she was in a precarious position on the cusp of the top 100. Boulter could rest and preserve her body for the 2026 campaign or take part in the WTA 125 event taking place in France to try and get the ranking points to get her over the edge. She opted in sitting out and gambling that no one would overtake her. "If there are tournaments there, it gives you an opportunity because you want to make the main draw of Australia," she told BBC Sport in November. "I think I know my own right choice, but it's difficult because it means that everyone else is going to be playing and passing me."
The risk did not pay off, with her dropping down to 106th in the world with the women's entry list based off the rankings as of December 8.
It was a terrible 2025 season for Boulter who won just 14 matches on Tour. Aside from winning a WTA 125 event in Paris, there was just one other occasion where she achieved more than one win in any given competition competed in. These early exits added up for Boulter, who saw her name tumble down the rankings. She also went separate ways with coach Biljana Veselinovic after a three-year stint together. She will look to reset and recover ahead of a hugely important 2026.

Which British players are competing in Australia

While Boulter may be absent from Melbourne in the new year, Great Britain will still send a very strong lineup Down Under. The current British number one Emma Raducanu is continuing to rise up the rankings as she looks to once again break into the top 20. The world number 29 will be joined by Sonay Kartal and Francesca Jones who directly enter through the main draw.
On the men's side, Jack Draper is set to make a long awaited return to the court. The former world number four saw his 2025 season fall away after an arm injury halted his progress on court, having sat out of action since withdrawing from the US Open. The improving Cameron Norrie finished his year with a final in the Metz Open, narrowly losing out to Learner Tien. He will be looking to continue his good form along with Jacob Fearnley who target a deep run in the coveted event, commenting January 18 - February 2.
