Former world number one
Martina Navratilova has big expectations
from French tennis player
Lois Boisson for the upcoming
US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year will begin on August 24 in New York.
Boisson became the breakout star during the
French Open earlier this year, where she defeated some big-name players to cement a spot in the semifinal of the competition. The 22-year-old got the better of the 2024 US
Open runner-up Jessica Pegula in the round of 16 with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Then in the quarterfinal, Boisson defeated Russia’s young
tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 7-6.
Boisson’s incredible journey ended in the semifinal as she lost to America’s
Coco Gauff in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2. After having an
incredible week in Paris, Boisson spoke to the media and explained her feelings
of cementing a spot in the semifinal of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
"I'm really disappointed today because I wanted to
go further than this semi-final," said Boisson back then. "She [Gauff]
played really, really good. She was just too good for me today, and that's it. I
just feel like I was running everywhere on the court today, so it was really
tough. She was really solid, and I couldn't play my game today because she was
just too good. [Regardless of the result] this week was very positive for me. It's
just that today it was quite simply too tough for me. I couldn't manage to get
my game going, but apart from today's match... the tournament as a whole was
very positive. Even today, there are a few positives even if there aren't
many."
Big task ahead
Former world number one Navratilova has now expressed her
expectations from Boisson ahead of the upcoming US Open. The 18-time Grand Slam
winner, while speaking to Sky Sports, stated that Boisson has the ability to surprise
opponents while playing at the Flashing Meadows. "Loïs Boisson played
fantastic tennis on clay at Roland-Garros,” said Navratilova. “She really
surprised me, and I think she can do some damage at the US Open. Her game
should adapt very well to the hard courts."
It will be interesting to see whether Boisson will be
able to live up to the expectations of Navratilova in a competition where she
has never played before. Boisson has had a few tough outings since that
outstanding run at the French Open. Boisson’s first appearance after featuring
at the Roland Garros was in the qualifying round at Wimbledon, where she was knocked
out after losing to Canada’s Carson Branstine with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
After that, Boisson featured in the Nordea Open where she
lost in the round of 16 to Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja in straight sets with a
score of 6-3, 6-4. After that, Boisson featured at the Hamburg Open where she
finished as the runner-up after beating Anna Bondar in the final in straight
sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Her most recent outing was in a tournament in Claveland
where she was knocked out after losing to Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann with a
score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
Overall, Boisson has had a good time on the court in 2025
where he won 27 out of 37 matches and suffered just 10 defeats in the process. Next
up for Boisson will be Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic. It will be only the
second meeting between the two players in professional tennis. In the only previous
meeting, which came way back in France in 2021, it was Golubic who came out on
top in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
