Jessica
Pegula talked about her goals for the 2023
WTA Finals, where she will be
competing in both singles and doubles alongside Coco Gauff.
World No. 5
qualified for the WTA Finals for the second consecutive year and will once
again be in both the singles and doubles draws. Despite a strong 2022, Jessica
Pegula couldn't perform at her best in last year's edition and ended with six
losses and no wins in both singles and doubles.
Another
qualification in 2023 opens the possibility for Pegula to improve her results,
so she was asked what she could do differently this year:
"Hopefully
win more matches, at least one win in singles or doubles, and it will be
better, so fingers crossed," she said.
The 2-time
WTA 1000 champion is part of the Bacalar Group, along with Aryna Sabalenka
(1st), Elena Rybakina (4th), and Maria Sakkari (8th). Her debut will be against
former Wimbledon champion Rybakina, with Pegula holding a 2-1 head-to-head
advantage.

The
American accumulated the highest number of wins in a single season with a 55-17
record and won two titles: the WTA 1000 Canadian Open and the WTA 250 Korea
Open. Pegula also reached the final of the Qatar Open against Swiatek and the
final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open against Veronika Kudermetova.
However,
she couldn't replicate her form in Grand Slams, with her best results being
quarterfinal appearances at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
In doubles,
partnering with Coco Gauff, she performed better in Grand Slams, reaching the
semifinals in Australia and at the French Open. The duo also secured two titles
and two finals in WTA 1000 events.
As the top
seeds in doubles, the American pair will face the 7th-seeded doubles team of
Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliff in the round-robin stage.
