It has been a dream fortnight for Iga Swiatek, as the Polish teenager continues her Cinderella run into her maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros.
The 19-year old made quick work of Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska in the semifinals, cruising through behind a 6-2 6-1 victory. By virtue of this win, Swiatek will become the first Polish woman to play in a Roland Garros final in the Open Era.
“I’m kind of surprised! I never thought before the tournament I would play so well. But I always knew that if I was going to make a final of a Grand Slam, it would be the French Open,” she admitted.
Swiatek has dropped just 23 games en route to the final, and she seems to have developed a game plan to help combat her nerves during this historic run.
“This is what I planned to move," Swiatek revealed. "I wanted to play this match as if it was a first round. I didn’t want to think about being in the semifinal because it would stress me. I just kept being aggressive, like in the previous matches. I’m feeling lucky that I’m feeling good and nothing hurts.”
The World No.53 will face reigning Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the final on Saturday, as the plucky American defeated Petra Kvitova 6-4 7-5 in the other semifinal. The duo have never met on the WTA circuit, making the outcome of the final even more intriguing.
