Russia’s young tennis star
Mirra Andreeva has once again reiterated
her desire to beat
Novak Djokovic’s record at Grand Slams.
The Serbian tennis star, who is also the defending champion
at
Wimbledon, has won the most number of Grand Slam titles out of all the
active players in the sport.
Andreeva, during
French Open earlier this year, expressed
her desire that she would like to break the record held by the current world
number two of 23 major titles in his career.
When asked by a journalist during the ongoing mega-event whether
she is still looking to break the 36-year-old’s record, the 16-year-old once
again reiterated her desire and stated that she just wants to win titles and it
doesn’t matter which tournament she is playing in.
“Of course [I want to beat Djokovic’s record],” she said. “I
always want to win, doesn't matter which tournament, which round. I always go
to win. I will just do my best. If I can advance to the round of 16, I will be
super happy. If I can advance to the semifinal, I will be of course super
happy. I will just try to do my best, then we will see what I will do. But
honestly, I don't have any goals. I just play.”
The Krasnoyarsk-born has been in pretty impressive form in
the third Grand Slam of the year where she has already booked her spot in the third
round.
Andreeva defeated China’s Wang Xiyu in the tournament opener
with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. In the second round, she was awarded a walkover
against Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova. She won the first set (6-3) and
was leading the second set (4-0) when the game was called off.
Andreeva will now face fellow countrywoman Anastasia
Potapova in the round of 32 clash on Saturday.
