Jessica Pegula dispatched of the last Spanish hope at the
Madrid Open, defeating
Sara Sorribes Tormo to secure her spot in the semifinals.
Pegula faced little difficulty in her 6-4 6-2 win, finally notching her first victory against the Spaniard in three meetings. The American looked dominant in the 1 hour 47 minute encounter, hitting 31 winners to just 15 by her opponent.
"Sorribes Tormo is just so tough, and she makes you play ... that's what I was expecting," Pegula said afterward. "I'm not going to out-rally or out-grind her from the back, so it's such a fine line of moving in and coming forward, but picking the right times to do that.
"So that's what I did, and I did it well enough. I drop-shotted a lot and it worked really well, that's also something I wanted to do. I executed my game plan, it's just so hard when you're out there."
By virtue of this victory, Pegula reached her second straight WTA 1000 semifinal, after having progressed go the same stage in Miami in March. Furthermore, the World No.14 has the opportunity to break into the Top 10 should he win the title and other results go her way. She faces Jil Teichmann on Thursday for a spot in the final, with both ladies meeting for the first time on the WTA tour.
