Alex Eala continued her strong start to the grass-court season on Tuesday, securing a straight-sets victory over Zhang Shuai at the Queen’s Club Championships before reflecting on one of the biggest stories in tennis: the return of Serena Williams. The Filipino star defeated the experienced Chinese player 6-3, 6-2 to book her place in the second round of the WTA 500 event in London.
The victory followed a productive transition from clay to grass for Eala, who arrived in Britain after a disappointing Roland Garros campaign. Despite limited preparation on the surface, the teenager has adapted quickly, building momentum after positive results during the opening weeks of the grass-court swing.
Her reward is a second-round meeting with sixth seed and close friend Iva Jovic, a match that will provide another significant test as Eala continues to establish herself on the main tour. Against Zhang, she handled difficult conditions effectively, maintaining consistency throughout the contest despite windy weather and the aggressive shot-making of her opponent.
While discussing her own performance, Eala was also asked about Williams' widely anticipated return to professional tennis. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion made a winning comeback in doubles at Queen’s Club alongside Victoria Mboko, ending a competitive absence that stretched back to the 2022 US Open.

Eala credited consistency as the key factor behind her opening-round success. Facing a former world-class competitor in Zhang, she remained composed throughout the match and adapted well to challenging external conditions that often make grass-court tennis unpredictable.
The Filipino acknowledged that her preparation for the surface had been far from ideal. Following Roland Garros, she had little opportunity to spend time training on grass before beginning her summer schedule. Nevertheless, the early signs suggest she has adjusted quickly to the faster courts.

"I think just training like normal. Honestly, I did not have a lot of time to train on grass before I started in Birmingham. I probably had a day or two, but I felt right at home and I really enjoyed last week. I'm trying to keep that momentum going."
That confidence was evident against Zhang. Eala controlled the baseline exchanges, limited unforced errors and prevented her opponent from dictating with power. The result continues a promising run during the early grass-court season and sets up an intriguing encounter against Jovic in the next round.

Serena Williams' return leaves lasting impression

Although her own tournament remains the immediate priority, Eala admitted that Williams' return is a moment she never expected to witness as an active tour player. The American's comeback has generated significant attention across the sport, with players from different generations reacting to the prospect of competing alongside one of tennis' most influential figures.
For Eala, Williams was a player she grew up watching rather than someone she expected to share the professional circuit with. "It's incredible. I did not think that I would be able to experience that in my lifetime—to be on the tour while Serena is competing as well."

"Of course, she is the great and such an inspiration, so to be able to see that firsthand and experience the tour at the same time as her is something I'll remember for life."
Williams' return has created one of the defining narratives of the grass-court season. After stepping away from the sport following the 2022 US Open, the American's decision to compete again has attracted global attention, particularly given her record of 23 Grand Slam singles titles and her status as one of the most successful athletes in tennis history.
Eala's admiration extends beyond Williams' achievements. She explained that simply sharing tournament grounds with the American would be memorable, highlighting the influence Williams continues to have on younger generations: "Even if I don't get any interactions with her, it would still be an honor just to be in that same space."
