Elina Svitolina breezed through a deciding set against Emma Raducanu to reach the Quarter-Finals of the
ASB Classic where she will face off against Marie Bouzkova in Auckland. It was a comeback win for the Ukrainian who sealed it 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 in the end.
It was back-to-back tough contests on paper with Caroline Wozniacki up first then Raducanu and likely the second biggest name outside of Coco Gauff left involved awaits in Bouzkova who will be next on Friday morning. She spoke afterwards and compared her win against Raducanu to seeing off Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, high praise indeed.
Pleased to be in good form in ominous signs
Also she admitted she had doubts about the form she would come into the season after injury curtailed her year after the US Open, but she is pleasantly surprised which is an ominous sign for others after an incredible 2023.
“It was at a really high level. I would say it was a similar match I had with Iga at Wimbledon,” Svitolina said.
“We were striking the ball well with every point finishing with a winner pretty much. It was good, competitive sets and it was the second best match I’ve played level wise. Of course, my start to the match was really bad, I wasn’t there 100% maybe mentally. “Also, Emma played really well, she didn’t miss one ball until 5-1, so it was a really high level and I’m happy I could be there and play well throughout the whole match.”
“I would say it was unlucky with the draw because it was Caroline and then Emma. Two great matches as well.” Svitolina continued. But I’m happy that I went past them and showing a really good level from the first point of the match with Caroline. I’m happy I played those matches and I can see where level is and where I am physically. After a break after the US Open, I wasn’t sure if I could be 100%, but now I can say that “I’m in good form and playing good tennis.”
