Last year's semifinalist
Maria Sakkari arrived at
Roland Garros with ambitions to win it but she stumbled many rounds before the final against
Karolina Muchova 6-7(5) 6-7(4).
Sakkari and Muchova played a superb match last year in Madrid with the Czech player winning that one and she won this one as well. It lasted well over two hours and saw Sakkari battle back twice from a break down in both sets. Both times she failed to completely overturn the result as she lost in the tiebreak.
Failing in crucial points of a match is not unfamiliar to Sakkari with the Greek already carrying a reputation for it. There have been many instances where she choked away a match and once again when it mattered the most Sakkari failed. She was down 2-5 in the first set but battled back to force a tiebreak. Muchova wasted 7 set points until the tiebreak but she took the first one in it.
The 2nd set saw Muchova be up a break once more but once again Sakkari was able to battle back and force the tiebreak. Once again she failed to win it as Muchova eased into a 7-4 finish. Muchova was the much better player all match long. She served better and won more points on serve. She faced almost twice as less break points on her serve.
She had 33 winners and only 22 mistakes with Sakkari having 31 winners but 31 mistakes. Muchova was simply better and she moves on. Sakkari will drop on the rankings because of the loss.
