In a thrilling contest that saw both ladies pushed to their limits,
Garbine Muguruza was able to overcome French Open champion
Barbora Krejcikova and remain in contention for the knock-out stage at the
WTA Finals in Guadalajara.
Muguruza rallied from a set down to pull off a 2-6 6-3 6-4 victory on Friday night, improving to 1-1 in the Teotihuacán group. The Spaniard lost her first match to
Karolina Pliskova, but demonstrated her championship spirit in her victory over Krejcikova.
The reigning French Open champion was dominant in the first set, displaying the brand of tennis that saw her lift her maiden Grand Slam title in Paris earlier this year. However, Muguruza increased her intensity after dropping the first set, relying on her power and poise to counter Krejcikova's variety of shots.
With the match tied at a set apiece, it was Muguruza who drew first blood in the final set, obtaining the crucial break and never looking back. The two-time Grand Slam champion sealed her victory after two hours and ten minutes, ensuring she still stood a chance of qualifying for the semifinals at the elite season-ending event.
