Williams and Sharapova had a long history of 21 matches, of which the American won 19 and today she added the 20th win.
Maria Sharapova is not at all easy on her return to the courts. In the first round, she was facing Serena Williams, with whom she has lost 19 matches already.
The 23-times Grand Slam champion did not hesitate in the match even once, allowing the opponent to win only 2 games. Although Sharapova's 5 breakballs were just one less than her rival, Serena was able to have 100% success in turning them away, unlike Sharapova, who only managed it once.
Williams will face 17-year-old countrywoman Caty McNally in the second round and we will see the match of two different generations. Williams is in the quarter with
Barty, who also succeeded in her match, and these two favorites continue in the tournament in Flushing Meadows.
After the match, Sharapova spoke about her current form, her return to the courts and shoulder pain.
"It's not an easy road,"
she said on Monday night. "It's never been. But I went through a shoulder procedure about four months ago. To find myself playing at a night match at the
US Open with people excited about the matchup, it's a pretty big deal. I'm fortunate to be a part of that."
"It's tough when you don't play much, then you face tougher opponents. You don't get through those, and it's an uphill battle."
"I have to be smart, but I really want to play as much as I can till the end of the year."
"Bottom line is I believe in my ability. You can write me off. There are many people that can write me off, especially after going down 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open.
"As long as it's not the person that's inside of you, you'll be okay."
