Karolina Muchova used her on-court speech in Qatar Open to underline the significance of a long-awaited breakthrough, describing her first WTA 1000 title as a moment of relief and shared accomplishment.
The 29-year-old Czech defeated Victoria Mboko 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the elite WTA 1000 tournament in Doha, but her focus afterward shifted quickly from the match itself to the meaning behind the trophy. “It’s been a while since I won a tournament, so it’s just nice to get that feeling again, to be reminded of that victory feeling here in Doha. It’s incredible, thank you very much,” she said during the trophy acceptance speech.
The Doha title is Muchova’s second career crown and her first since August 2019, when she triumphed in Seoul, ending a drought that included four lost finals, among them Roland Garros three years ago and two WTA 1000 finals. In Doha, she became the fourth Czech woman to win the tournament, after Petra Kvitova (2018 and 2021), Karolina Pliskova (2017) and Lucie Safarova (2015).
The result will lift her eight places to world No. 11, while Mboko will rise from No. 13 into the top 10 for the first time. “It’s my first WTA 1000 tournament win, and I’m so incredibly happy that it’s here in Doha. Thank you.”
Beyond the ranking implications, Muchova’s address revealed how much the moment represented emotionally. Rather than dwell on the scoreline, she repeatedly referenced the “victory feeling” and the collective effort behind it, framing the title as a shared reward rather than an individual milestone.

Praise for Mboko and recognition of a breakthrough week

Muchova also dedicated a significant portion of her speech to Mboko, the 19-year-old Canadian who will break into the top 10 for the first time after reaching the final. The Czech highlighted her opponent’s composure and level, acknowledging the generational contrast between them.
“I’m very excited. I’d also like to congratulate Victoria. You’re still a teenager, if I’m not mistaken, and you play with so much maturity and incredible tennis. It’s been an incredible week for you, so congratulations,” said Muchova. “I’m sure you have many titles ahead of you. Congratulations to you and to your team, wherever your team is. Congrats guys, and good luck for the rest of the season.”
Her remarks reflected the broader context of the tournament. Mboko arrived ranked No. 13 and leaves Doha as a top-10 player, confirming her rapid ascent. The Canadian was making her debut in Doha — and it was only her sixth WTA 1000 main draw — and she managed to reach the final for the second time, although this time she did not take the title, unlike her run in Montreal.
The 19-year-old consolidates herself as one of the best players on the planet and is beginning to be seen as a true top-tier player for this season, a firm candidate at any of the most important tournaments.

Gratitude to team, organisers and fans

A recurring theme in Muchova’s address was gratitude toward her team. After several seasons interrupted by injuries and missed opportunities, she emphasised the importance of those who supported her return to title-winning form.
“I’m just so excited for my team that we get to experience this together, so thank you for standing here with me. Thank you Sven, Vaci, Kirsten, Catherine for taking care of me this week. Yari at home for sure is watching, so thank you, everyone. Your support means a lot, and I’m very glad that again we get to celebrate and live this win together.”
She extended that appreciation to the tournament’s organisers and sponsors, underlining the scale of the event and the atmosphere generated in the closing rounds. “I would like to thank everyone who made this incredible tournament possible. It’s been very fun, and I’d like to especially thank Qatar Total Energies and the Qatar Tennis Federation. And at the end, I’d like to thank all of you for coming here, especially for the last rounds, for making this atmosphere so great. Thank you. Thank you very much.”
The ceremony concluded with the official presentation, as His Excellency Naser Ben Ghanem Al-Khalife handed Muchova the champion’s cheque and the announcer invited the crowd to recognise the new titleholder once more. For Muchova, however, the defining element of the evening was simpler: after years of near-misses, including four lost finals since 2019, she could once again describe herself as a champion — and this time at WTA 1000 level.
