The last two decades of ATP tennis were dominated by the big three of
Novak Djokovic,
Roger Federer and
Rafael Nadal and this year's WTA tennis saw its own big three spearheaded by
Iga Swiatek.
Tennis is a sport with eras. Some are more impressive than others and for much of this year, it seems like WTA joined the big three era. There was the Serena Williams era and now we have an era where three players have proven to be quite a bit above the rest. It's very similar to the ATP big three era but so far it's only one year.
Iga Swiatek is the top player, the number one in the ranking but two more players emerged this year. They are Aryna Sabaelnka and Elena Rybakina. It started pretty early in the year when Swiatek got beaten by Rybakina at the Australian Open. The Kazakh player made her way to the final but lost to Aryna Sabalenka.
WTA Big Three
That started a fascinating streak which is still going on. WTA tennis generally doesn't feature too many streaks because the sport is very prone to change. One week it's this player, another week it's another player but this year it's been three. All big events this year have faced either Sabalenka, Rybakina or Swiatek in the final if not two of them.
In Australia, we had Sabalenka and Rybakina. In Dubai, we had Swiatek in the final. Indian Wells saw Rybakina and Sabalenka. Miami had Rybakina in the final. Madrid saw Sabalenka battle Swiatek with Rome featuring Rybakina in the final. Now we arrive at Roland Garros which will feature Swiatek this year completing the impressive streak.
There hasn't been a major final on the WTA tour this year that didn't feature either Swiatek, Sabalenka or Rybakina.
