The Italy team for the
Davis Cup Finals will be severely depleted with
Lorenzo Musetti the latest to decide that he will not prolong his season after the ATP Finals in what is a wider debate perhaps about the spot of the prestigious tournament on the calendar in relation to a stacked tennis schedule.
Jannik Sinner confirmed months ago that he wouldn't be playing in the tournament giving himself the time to recover after what was a super busy season. This though was met with criticism by certain junctures of the tennis world as he will like Musetti play in Turin this week but not go to Bologna next.
Present during the last two editions where Italy were crowned champions, the World Number One has decided to skip this season which has got complaints from Italian tennis legends in particular Nicola Pietrangeli. But he explained why last week at the
ATP Finals.
"I am proud to be Italian and I am happy to have been born in this country and not in Austria or elsewhere. I say this with complete sincerity. This country deserves even more than what I do. We have tennis infrastructure, quality coaches, great players, and a very strong competitive spirit," he said this past week to Punto de Break. "We are fortunate to have regions with their own identities. We must stay united, appreciate each other, and be proud to be part of a common project which is Italy. At the end of the season, you need a little time to recover from all the accumulated pressure, the emotions experienced, the physical and mental exhaustion from the competition, which is very high, and all this requires time to recover and get back in shape."
"If you can count on an extra week of preparation, you will also have an extra week to rest and arrive at the pre-season much more motivated, with energy and the desire to return to tennis.
"I play tennis almost every day of my life and there are times when I don't feel like it. If I can bring forward my holidays and start the pre-season earlier, I can gradually manage the training load, which is essential to avoid injuries. I have no doubt that this year, I made the right decision."
Now Musetti is out. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the group stage 6-4, 6-1 yesterday which now ends his hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds and almost confounds the Italian to end his season now. But there might be reasoning behind his decision not to play Davis Cup. His partner is due to give birth shortly so he will likely want to be by her side after what has been an arduous time for Musetti trying to qualify for Turin which is likely another reason given for many others their spot was confirmed weeks before.
It won't go down too well with the pride of Italy but now their team sits as Cobolli, Sonego, Berrettini, Bolelli and Vavassori. For a country that puts so much money in to have the event, it isn't perhaps what they would've wanted. But they will hope to still have a chance to win Sinner, Musetti or not.
