Despite it being early into the week at the
Barcelona Open, the big names start their quest mainly on Tuesday with
Stefanos Tsitsipas as well as
Carlos Alcaraz both in action on Day Two. Our
preview runs through it all.
Casper Ruud is defending champion at the Barcelona Open scooping the title last season defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final and also begins his quest to defend it.
But it is Tsitsipas who is first up playing big serving American Reilly Opelka who hit the headlines this week for testifying that the ATP had threatened him after he signed his name on the PTPA lawsuit.
Opelka said that he was told that his pension could be taken away and was threatened by Andrea Gaudenzi through a player. But while that may or may not be the case, he will resume business this week while fighting matters elsewhere.
He has a 1-1 Head to Head against Tsitsipas winning their last meeting back in 2021 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 albeit their meeting prior to that saw Opelka technically lead before he was forced to retire 6-5 up in the Quarter-Finals of Cincinnati the year before.
Albeit Tsitsipas will be heavily favoured to win on the dirt in comparison to Opelka. With Goran Ivanisevic not yet confirmed but potentially taking over as his new coach, Tsitsipas will hope to be in the position to rule the roost again in short order and in defending a final from last year, it is needed.
Casper Ruud follows on with the second seed losing shockingly to Alexei Popyrin in Monte-Carlo. This is despite him being in a winning position. With Geneva and also Roland Garros points also on his mind, he needs a big few weeks and it will hopefully start in Barcelona. He faces Daniel Elahi Galan in his opener.
Carlos Alcaraz won Monte-Carlo a mere two days ago.
Then it is the turn of Carlos Alcaraz. The now World No.2 returns a mere two days on from his triumph at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He will face Ethan Quinn at around 4pm local this afternoon.
Alcaraz had to withdraw from this tournament last year and given the
schedule of Madrid and Rome after this perhaps could've done the same this time. He now has to play five tournaments on the bounce including Roland Garros.
For a player with well mooted injury issues, that isn't exactly the best bet. But like Rafael Nadal, fans want to see him and having two tournaments in his home country means he has to really be there. But can he regain the title he couldn't defend previously due to injury. Will he be jumping in the pool at the weekend? Time will tell.
But perhaps an early defeat this week could do his clay court hopes more than good. Then to end the day on Pista Rafa Nadal is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina returning after a semi-final run in Monte-Carlo. He faces Stan Wawrinka aiming to continue his fantastic form.
Perhaps though the entertainment comes on Pista Andres Gimeno though. Arthur FIls has been one of the best players on tour in recent months and starts off against Pablo Carreno Busta trying to reformulise former glories. Albeit against a young hungry Frenchman, it leans very much in his favour.
Same perhaps can be said in a game which would ordinarily favour the South American in Tomas Martin Etcheverry but it will be
Alex de Minaur who is favourite. The Aussie ace thumped Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev in two statement wins last week and in a country where he grew up, can he feel at home on the Spanish courts.
Frances Tiafoe v Jaume Munar and Karen Khachanov v Cameron Norrie are also among the ties on this court today. While South American clay court king, Sebastian Baez also begins his tournament.
