Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Canadian Open. The 37-year-old is often regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
As per the latest report, which was officially confirmed by the ATP in a release on their official account on their website, the former world number one has decided not to take part in the Canadian Open. The ATP 1000 event will be played from August 06 to 12 in Montreal where some of the top players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
It is unclear why Djokovic took that decision as he is currently playing at the Paris Olympics, but the event will conclude on August 04. The Belgrade-born has already booked his place in the third round of the singles event in Paris after beating the former world number one Spain’s Rafael Nadal in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4 on Monday.
Djokovic has an impressive record at the Canadian Open, where he lifted the title four times in his illustrious career. His first win in the competition was back in 2007 when he defeated the former world number one Switzerland’s Roger Federer in the final with a score of 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. Four years later in 2011, the 24-time Grand Slam winner once again lifted the title in Montreal after beating America’s Mardy Fish with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
A year later, in 2012, Djokovic lifted the Canadian Open title again after beating France’s Richard Gasquet in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2. His last title in Montreal came back in 2016 when he defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets with a score of 6-3 and 7-5. Last year, it was Italy’s Jannik Sinner who lifted the title after beating after beating Australia’s Alex de Minaur in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
