Former Spanish tennis star
Juan Carlos Ferrero has heaped praise
on the current world number one
Novak Djokovic.
The 36-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the history
of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
Ferrero, who is currently coaching Spain’s young tennis sensation
Carlos Alcaraz, heaped praise on Djokovic who according to him has adapted
like
Rafael Nadal and
Roger Federer did in the later stages of their respective
careers.
"He [Djokovic] has been adapting just like Rafa or
Roger did who started in our time and the years have passed and in the end they
end up here today,” he said. “The world continues to move non-stop and people
have to adapt.
"Admiration and respect. When you spend time with him
in tournaments you see his desire, the reason why he is in perfect condition to
continue competing, how he takes care of himself, how he trains, the motivation
that he still shows. For me it is of utmost admiration.”
Djokovic has had a rather disappointing start to his 2024
campaign where he was knocked out of the first Grand Slam of the year — the Australian
Open—after losing in the semifinal to Italy’s Jannik Sinner with a score 6-1,
6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
