Novak Djokovic has made an honest admission in regard to seeing his former coach
Boris Becker with
Holger Rune at the 2023 Rolex
Paris Masters.
Six-time Grand Slam champion Becker coached Djokovic from 2013-2016, helping him to six of his 24 major titles and 14 ATP Tour titles. The World No. 1 is currently coached by Goran Ivanisevic.
However, Becker has moved on to another Top 10 player by joining forces with World No. 6 Rune. The Dane has had a difficult time as of late, having struggled to put together back-to-back wins since Wimbledon. The 20-year-old attended a training week in Monte-Carlo with the German champion before Becker announced that he would be training Rune for the remainder of 2023.
Djokovic admits seeing Becker coach Rune won't be easy
This coaching situation appears to already be producing good results, as Rune finally got past the second round at a tournament at the Swiss Indoors Basel last week, reaching the semi-finals before being ousted by eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Meanwhile, Djokovic opened up about his emotions in the scenario that he faces Rune at the Paris Masters, with his former coach in his opponent's box. The two are projected to battle it out in the quarter-finals, provided the Serbian player gets past the likes of Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Ben Shelton, who he is predicted to face in his earlier rounds.
Meanwhile, Rune will have to move past a first-round clash with 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem.
"I'm really glad to see Boris back on the tour as a coach. It's probably not going to be that nice and comfortable for me seeing him if I face Holger, seeing him in the opposite box, because that hasn't happened yet. If it does, obviously that's not a great feeling," Djokovic said.
Rune and Djokovic clashed in the final of last year's Paris Masters, with the 20-year-old prevailing over the established tennis star 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to win his first and only Masters 1000 title in his career so far.
